What This Part Does

This electronic ignition control module operates and monitors the fireplace ignition sequence in an IPI (Intermittent Pilot Ignition) system.

When the fireplace receives a call for heat from a wall switch, thermostat, or remote control, the module begins the ignition cycle by powering the spark igniter and coordinating gas flow through the valve.

The module monitors flame rectification signals from the pilot assembly to verify ignition. Once pilot flame is proven, the module signals the gas valve to open the main burner.

This control module also manages safety shutdown functions. If ignition fails, flame is lost, or a fault condition is detected, the module will stop gas flow and place the system into safety lockout.

Electronic control modules are used in modern IPI fireplace systems and typically operate with battery backup or household power.

System Type

This is an electronic ignition system, commonly called an IPI system or intermittent pilot ignition system. Instead of keeping a pilot flame burning continuously, the fireplace lights the pilot only when there is a call for heat.

IPI systems use a control module to manage ignition, flame sensing, gas valve operation, and safety shutdown functions.

This system commonly includes:

  • Control module — controls spark, flame sensing, and gas valve operation.
  • Electronic gas valve — opens and closes gas flow to the pilot and main burner.
  • Igniter / flame sensor assembly — creates spark and confirms flame presence.
  • Battery backup or power supply — provides operating power for ignition and control functions.

These systems offer improved efficiency, remote-control compatibility, and added safety features, but they also include more electronic components than a millivolt system.

Common Problems This Control Module May Fix

  • Fireplace will not light or start
  • No spark at the pilot assembly
  • Pilot lights but main burner will not ignite
  • Intermittent operation or random shutdowns
  • Module clicks continuously without ignition
  • No response from wall switch, thermostat, or remote
  • System locks out after failed ignition attempts
  • Burner shuts off unexpectedly during operation

The control module is the main electronic controller for the fireplace ignition system. A failed module can prevent proper communication between the pilot assembly, gas valve, flame sensor, and wall controls.

Before replacing the module, also inspect the pilot assembly, wiring harness, grounding, batteries, and gas valve, as these components can cause similar symptoms.

Warranty Information

This product includes a 12-month warranty from the date of purchase. This warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship under normal operating conditions.

Fireplace components must be properly installed and matched to the correct system (millivolt vs IPI, natural gas vs propane).

This warranty does NOT cover:
• Improper installation or incorrect application
• Use with the wrong gas type (NG vs LP)
• Misdiagnosis of the issue
• Damage caused by other failing components
• Normal wear and tear
• Labor, service, or diagnostic time

Because many fireplace issues can be caused by multiple components, we strongly recommend confirming the diagnosis before replacing parts.

We are happy to assist with this. Proof of purchase is required for all warranty claims. Please contact us prior to removal or replacement of the part so we can help verify the issue and guide the warranty process.

How do I know if this part is bad?

Common signs of a failing control module include no spark during ignition, intermittent operation, repeated system lockouts, or the fireplace failing to respond to a wall switch, remote, or thermostat.

In some cases, the module may fail to send power to the igniter or gas valve, preventing the pilot or burner from lighting properly.

Before replacing the control module, it is important to verify that the igniter, flame sensor, wiring, power supply, and gas valve are functioning correctly, as these components can produce similar symptoms.

How difficult is this part to replace?

Replacing a fireplace control module is generally considered a moderate repair that involves working with low-voltage wiring and electronic ignition components.

The process typically requires access to the control compartment, disconnecting wiring harnesses, and properly reconnecting the replacement module according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

Care should be taken to avoid wiring errors or damage to sensitive electronic components during installation.

Is this a safe DIY repair?

Control module replacement is generally safer than repairs involving gas lines, but it still requires working with electrical and ignition components inside the fireplace.

Improper wiring, incorrect setup, or failure to follow manufacturer instructions can prevent proper ignition or cause unsafe operation. Care should also be taken to avoid damaging sensitive electronic components during installation.

If you are comfortable working with low-voltage wiring and fireplace components, this may be a manageable repair. When in doubt, installation should be performed by a qualified technician.

Do I need any special tools to install this?

Most control module replacements can be performed using basic hand tools such as screwdrivers and nut drivers. Some installations may also require access to wiring connectors or mounting brackets inside the fireplace.

It is important to verify all wiring connections are installed correctly and securely, as improper wiring can prevent ignition or damage system components.

Always disconnect power to the fireplace before servicing electronic components.
